Bag Making + the Giveaway Winner!
Hey y'all! How's it going? While going through pictures on my iPhone today, I discovered that I hadn't shared any pictures of the Super Tote that I made before heading off to Quilt Market. Frankly, I think Instagram is having a detrimental effect on my blogging - I take pictures of the things that I make (or am in the process of making), post them to Instagram, and then completely for to post them to my blog! Bad.
With that said, I'm going to share a few of the pics that I took that day while making it!
I watch a lot of Harry Potter while sewing (I also tend to drink a lot of coffee)! Anna's Super Tote pattern is absolutely one of my most favourite bags to make - the pattern pieces go together so easily and the instructions are just fab!
The Clover Wonder Clips make this stage of making this bag soooo easy! The first time I made a Super Tote I didn't have Wonder Clips and just used pins - it was super frustrating. I also use these while hand sewing binding and they work great!
I used fabrics by Sarah Watts and Jay McCarroll for the outside, along with some wool suiting for the sides and outer handles. The interior (lining, pockets, zipper bands, and reverse of the handles) features three prints by Anna Maria Horner.
I still carry this bag everyday and just love it! I was going through my Quilt Market pictures, and it's quite funny, but my Super Tote doesn't show up in any of the pictures - it's always hidden by someone else!

A Little Catch-Up + the Giveaway Winners!
Hey y'all! How's everyone doing after the holidays? I'm pretty much wiped out, but it was nice to see everyone. I'll post all of the crafting I did for holiday gifts soon, but I've got something else to share today. This should tell you exactly how behind I am - this particular project was finished in mid-October and I'm only just getting around to blogging it now! Since my computer is still broken, I am just getting further and further behind with sharing everything.
It's a tablet case! I bought the Nexus 7 in October as a birthday present to myself and it's what I've been using for email, internet, etc during this time without my computer. It's very similar to other cases I've made using Amber's tutorial before but this time I included a patchwork pocket on the front (and again, it's re-sized from the original tutorial). The main body of the sleeve is yarn-dyed Essex and the patchwork pocket features a bunch of scraps from my bin.
I used an Art Gallery print for the interior because the cotton is really soft and I thought it would be nice next to the tablet. I accidentally made the tab closure too big but didn't notice until I had the whole thing sewn together, so I just doubled it up over itself and tacked it down by going over the topstitching line again.
Now, this is super-late but (better late than never) I thought you'd like to know who the two winners of the Botanics Roll Ups from Fat Quarter Shop are! Here we go...

Another Vox Case + the Giveaway Winner!
Hey y'all! Some of you may remember the Kobo Vox case I made my mum two Christmases ago, well, I made another one.
This one is for my mum's friend D. She not-so-subtly hinted that maybe I should make a case for her Vox too seeing as she does my taxes every year (for free *cough*). For those of you who don't know, a Kobo Vox is a tablet e-reader similar in many ways to the 7" Kindle Fire.
If you saw the post with my mum's case, you'll notice that I used the same fabric but in a different colourway. It's pretty hard to say no to fabric with books on it for this purpose and D's favourite colour is pink. Plus, knowing my mum and D, they will probably think it's a hoot that they have matching cases to go with their matching readers. Girls.
The exterior fabric is from the Grand Tour by Victoria and Albert for David's Textiles and the interior solids is one of the newer Kona colours which I believe is called Iron. Once again, I resized Amber's iPad cover tutorial to fit the Vox (which is a really great tutorial!), which was a feat in and of itself let me tell you! I didn't have any measurements written down from my mum's case (I probably did at the time) so I had to figure out the adjustments all over again; I'm really hoping the Vox fits well since I didn't have one in front of me this time either to test out as I went. I hope she likes it.

Holiday Catch-Up + the Giveaway Winner!
Hey y'all! So I guess I took a bit of an inadvertent break there! With Hanukkah, Christmas, and our anniversary (and the fact that I made most of the presents for each and have been applying for jobs), the time just slipped away from me. But I'm back now, woot! I thought today that I would share some of the presents I made for Alex for the holidays.
We'll start off with Hanukkah (since it did come first and all). But what could this be?!
Why, it's a guitar strap, of course! Alex has been playing guitar for a number of years, and I thought it would be pretty fun to see if I could make him a new pretty strap to enjoy. I pulled out a bunch of Denyse Schmidt fabrics from both Hope Valley and Chicopee in colours that I thought he'd like and told then him to pull out any he didn't like particularly.
I used his old guitar strap as a basis for my measurements and pieced the patchwork part together (it's backed in Kona Medium Grey with a heavyweight interfacing in between); both the brass buckle and ring came from an old messenger bag of Alex's that I bought him almost four years ago but that broke about a year ago. I cut the brown leather end bits from an old purse of mine and based them on the ones from his old guitar strap. It works perfectly!
Now onto Christmas - these slippers took me almost four Harry Potter movies to knit and man did the chunky yarn and big needles make my hands hurt!
I used the Non-Felted Slippers pattern which can be found free on Ravelry and only made a couple of changes to make them bigger (the original pattern is about a ladies medium) - my pattern notes can be found on Ravelry here. I really like these slippers because I think they have a more masculine feel than many other slipper patterns I've seen and they are super-chunky and cozy.
I also made him this zipper pouch! The white wood grain fabric is Ikea and the denim-y looking fabric is actually wool suiting in sort of a grey-blue; the deer is an iron-on patch that I bought ages ago with Alex in mind and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally use it!
I'm starting to get the hang of this zipper thing (this was only my third I think), so this time I decided to be a little adventurous and try zipper tabs - seemed to come out alright I think! I also used a metal zipper because I thought it would give the pouch a little more ruggedness.
And these photos (except this one of course) have all been brought to you by this baby - my new DSLR! It was my anniversary gift from Alex and I love it; Alex's anniversary gift is sitting under it not quite done. I'm making Alex his own quilt but couldn't get it all completed prior to our anniversary since he works from home. I just wrapped up the top and gave it to him. I'll show the whole thing when I get it all quilted and bound.

TMQG Holiday Scrap Swap + the Giveaway Winner!
As many of you know I am President of the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild and this year I thought we should have a little bit of fun to celebrate our last meeting leading up to the holiday season (we don't hold a meeting in December because that would be crazy). Back in August and September guild members brought in sandwich sized ziploc bags full of scraps and we swapped them out. We each then made some small giftie type items using the scraps and held a secret Santa/mystery gift swap at this month's meeting.
I received Doris's scraps and made these three small items. I originally was making a tote with patchwork pockets but somehow managed to totally jank it up, so I cut the pockets down to make the mug rug and the pincushion. The tree ornament is loosely based on Anna's tutorial, however I didn't use her template and just free handed everything (I'm sure yours will turn out much nicer if you actually follow the tutorial). Doris's scraps aren't really my style but I wanted to try really hard to use the scraps that I was given and not much else (which wasn't part of the rules for the swap but I wanted to challenge myself). The only things that didn't come from Doris's scraps were the felt and baker's twine for the tree.
Funnily enough, the mystery gift I received was actually made from my scraps! Sheila made me this lovely (and giant) zipper pouch and used a few of my scraps to create a rainbow effect across the front.
Sheila boxed the edges of the pouch so that it can stand up on it's own. In the picture it's got reusable shopping bags stuffed inside, but I'm planning on using it to hold either sewing supplies when I need to travel (I think my Clover mini iron will fit well in here with a slew of other things) or to hold knitting projects that require longer straight needles. Now didn't Sheila do a fabulous job? I love it!
And then...
I totally got photobombed! Yep, that's Alex. Oy.

Hot Air Balloons + the Giveaway Winners!
As many of you know I am part of the Joy Circle for do. Good Stitches; October's block was chosen by Elaine and was such fun to make!
Hot air balloons!!! This is a paper piecing pattern available for free from Quiltmaker Magazine (you can find it here). In the original version the balloon part is done using one fabric (as with my version on the right) but Elaine told us to go ahead and do anything we wanted with our balloons, so I did the second one kind of scrappy and just paper pieced the strips into the available space on the balloon template. For both the background is a light blue Kona (sorry, can't remember which one) and the baskets and stems are also Kona (I believe it is Mocha). The balloon on the right was made using some Tula Pink Prince Charming, and the balloon on the left is a mix of scraps from Parisville, Modern Meadow, Terrain, and Dream On.
So, I bet you want to know who won the super-awesome Simply Fat Quarters giveaway, eh? Well, drum roll please!! We have four winners...

Flip-Pal Sleeve + the Giveaway Winner
Hey all! How's everyone doing? I've been away for a few days visiting my mum and grandparents, but now I'm back and can finally do this post since I have my computer back and have gotten most everything transferred back on to it - hurray!
One of my big plans while visiting my grandparents was to take my Flip-Pal and scan some of our older family pictures. So, of course, I needed to make it a travel case!
The Flip-Pal is larger than most of the tablet/reader cozy patterns available so I made up my own, but was inspired to add the pocket by Ann Kelle's iPad sleeve tutorial.
Aside from the linen that I used for the outer shell, all of the fabrics used are Heather Ross. I thought it would be fun to use some of the hexagons I had lying arund for embellishment - the big ones were made by me and the two teeny one came to me by Jo as part of the Handsome Hexies swap on Flickr.
I also made the 3/4" button for the closure using a little fussy cut mushroom from some of the Heather Ross gnomes munki munki.
The sleeve came out a teensy bit bigger than I meant it to but hey, that's better than being too small! I bound the top of the pocket using some Heather Ross that I fussy cut and also added a little loop for hanging the USB/SD card reader that holds my photo software.
The lining is, yet again, Heather Ross from the West Hill collection (you can see the scallop here that I fussy cut for the pocket binding). I love this - it just make me so super-happy to have pretty things to carry my stuff around it!

Hello all! Well, what a week! First off I'd like to take a minute to welcome my newest sponsor Southern Fabric (you can see their button over there on the right)! So this week has been quite interesting - first, there was being in Stitch Craft Create (which I talked about in my last post) and then I got my sewing machine back! Hurray!
Welcome home Genevieve - I missed you! Some of you may know Genevieve's story, but if not and if you're interested, you can read about it here. Yep, this is the little girlie that I do all my sewing and quilting on; she's not very big or fancy but she gets the job done. I would love to have a sewing machine with a bigger throat space and maybe some more bells and whistles, but I do love my Genevieve. Is it weird that I named my sewing machine? Have any of you done the same?
In honour of Genevieve's return and as a means of testing her out to make sure she was good to go, I made this little Patchwork Pencil Case from Rashida's book Zakka Style. This particular project was designed by Shannon Dreval of Petits Details. I changed the dimensions slightly to make it longer so that it could hold some DPNs - the original finished measurement is 6 3/4" long, but these DPNs are about 7 1/2" long so I elongated both the lining and longer linen piece by one inch. Aside from the natural linen, all of the fabrics are bits and pieces from Tula Pink's Parisville line - these little scraps are leftovers from a quilt I finished almost a year ago and still haven't show. Procrastinate much?
I also made Alex some cuff links using a blue gingham fabric that is one of his favourites (the same I used to make him this tie) - I believe this particular gingham is by Cranston. The tops are 1/2" wide and are the perfect size for french cuffs. I was thinking about making some of these for my shop (maybe in Liberty, more gingham, etc); what do you guys think?

A Little Sewing and a Little Knitting + the Giveaway Winner!
I had this past week off from work (annual holiday that I had to take before the end of this month) and since we weren't going away anywhere I spent much of this week at home. I fully intended to sew and craft everyday to my heart's content but that really didn't happen (procrastinate much?); instead I watched Downton Abbey, some movies, went out for coffee with a friend, went thrifting, read four books, and only actually did a little sewing on Thursday. But I did make something fun!
I saw Tamiko's tutorial for this sock knitting bag on her blog and decided that I just had to make it (and pin it) because it was so pretty! Now let me preface this by saying that I had not actually ever knit socks before making this bag, but I just loved it so much, and really wanted to try making a round bottomed bag so I went for it!
All of the fabrics used (except for the lining) came from my scrap bin. The 40 squares that make up the patchwork exterior include some Heather Ross Mendocino, Joel Dewberry Modern Meadow, Patty Young Flora & Fauna, Basic Grey, City Weekend by Oliver + S (that white dot on yellow is one of my favourite fabrics ever), Sandi Henderson Meadowsweet, and a few others.
The lining fabric is also from Sandi Henderson's Meadowsweet collection. I did a few things differently than in the tutorial; I didn't hand stitch around the linen like in the tutorial but rather did two lines of top stitching in white thread. Instead of sewing my lining and exterior pieces together at the top while they were inside out (and then pulling them through a hole in the lining and sewing it up afterwards) I just turned everything right side out, turned the edges under a quarter of an inch, pressed, and top stitched everything closed. I also made my own draw string by basically making double-fold binding (strip cut at 1.5") and then top stitching along the open ends. I can't remember what collection the fabric I used is from but I think it's Lecien.
Ohhhh pretty! And because I know someone is going to ask - the yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Tern which I bought online at Eat, Sleep, Knit.
And then, just because I made a sock knitting bag, I did in fact knit a sock - it was magic I tell you! I've actually had this yarn and pattern sitting around for about 2.5-3 years but hadn't started them, however with my new sock bag in hand it seemed inevitable and so I did. This first sock was started on Friday night while watching Who Do You Think You Are, Grimm, and When Harry Met Sally with Alex and was finished on Saturday morning while watching The Young Victoria. The second one is on the needles now and I'll tell you more about the pattern, etc when I have the full pair!

Giveaway Winner + Craftsy Block of the Month Tour!
Hey all! How are you guys doing? I'm a couple of days late in announcing the winner of Parson Gray's Designer Select Fat Quarter Bundle, but I hope you all will forgive me! My mummy was in town on Saturday and I spent most of the day today sewing up a new purse (which I'll show y'all very soon), but without further ado...the winner is...
Now for a little announcement... Have you guys heard of Craftsy? Craftsy is a place where crafters of all sorts can share their projects with each other, view and upload pictures, create project pages, take classes and workshops (both paid and free), and now buy patterns from indie designers (automatic download and designers don't have to pay any fees - amazing) - I *heart* Craftsy a whole heck of a lot!
One of the super-cool things that Craftsy has going on right now is a free Block of the Month workshop hosted by Amy of Stitchery Dickory Dock. This BOM features video tutorials with step-by-step instructions on how to make a variety of blocks. I've signed up for the BOM and have already watched the first couple of videos. A few weeks ago Amy approached me and asked if I'd like to take part in a blog tour for her workshop - of course I said yes, you know because Amy's a cool person and stuff. There will be a number of stops along the way, with the your hosts doing a variety of posts - since I'm the first stop on the tour I'll be doing an overview/review of the workshops, but others are doing tutorials and interviews and more!
These nifty little blocks are the ones that Amy made for February's workshop video - pretty! As an added bonus every stop on the tour will be giving away a $25 USD gift certificate courtesy of Fat Quarter Shop - woot!
